Former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder has donated his $35million DC home to the American Cancer Society after failing to sell it. 

In February 2023, the billionaire and his wife, Tanya Snyder, put the five bedroom, six-and-a-half bathroom mansion in Potomac, Maryland, on the market for $49million.

A few months later, the couple lowered the price of the 30,000-square-foot property to $34.9million before they decided to take it off the market in March. 

Instead of waiting on the sale of the massive home, the couple decided to donate to the American Cancer Society, who plan to re-list the property for $34.9million - like the Snyders did. 

It is unclear exactly why the couple decided to donate to the charity, but donating a home can result in substantial tax benefits. The American Cancer Society said that Dan and Tanya are 'passionate advocates' for cancer research.

Snyder was initially asking for $49 million for the home, but has now decided to donate it before it is put back on the market

David H. Kirk, a national tax partner at Ernst & Young, told The Wall Street Journal if the Snyder's held the title of a property for more than a year before they donate the $35million home, they can deduct the fair market value of it from their taxable income. 

By donating the house, the Snyder's also no longer have to pay property taxes for the home that sits on 13.5 acres. 

Another benefit is that they won't have to prolong the sale of the mansion as the charity is now in charge of the sale and how much the home goes for. 

Snyder purchased the lot from the estate of Jordan's King Hussein and Queen Noor and completed home construction in 2004, The Wall Street Journal reported.  

The limestone mansion is surrounded by gates and is intricately decorated with high ceilings, white crown molding, French doors, massive windows and spiral staircases. 

It also comes with a large theater room decked out in red furnishings, hardwood accents and a massive projector screen. 

The back of the home is complete with a large entertaining space that includes indoor and outdoor patio area, a large in-ground pool, and a big grass lawn.

There is also a two-bedroom guesthouse, a burgundy and gold-colored basketball court and a 12-car garage on the property.

Daniel Heider, a local agent of TTR Sotheby’s International said the property was extremely customized for a family 'who don't interact with a kitchen, per se.' 

'There’s not a lot of folks in Washington who had their hands in the air to pay almost $50 million,' Heider said. 

Kirk emphasized it can be harder for charities to take in a house donation than that of a cash or stock donation. 

'The carrying charges on large houses can create a burden on the charities themselves,' he said. 

Kael Reicin, the chief finance and strategy officer for the American Cancer Society, said the charity felt prepared to take over the Snyder's property because it already manages real estate. 

The charity manages Hope Lodges, which offers free accommodations for cancer patients and their families near hospitals across the county. 

Reicin revealed that American Cancer Society invested in the property's maintenance and operational costs before the donation so it can stay intact for prospective buyers. 

He added the charity has considered using the mansion for marketing events before it sells. 

'Proceeds from the gift will be unrestricted and used to further ACS’s mission,' the American Cancer Society said. 

The charity added the Snyder's are 'passionate advocates' for cancer research as Tanya herself is a cancer survivor. 

According to the NFL, Tanya survived breast cancer, while Dan survived a bout with thyroid cancer in 2001. 

Tanya became the national spokeswoman for the NFL's 'Crucial Catch' breast cancer awareness campaign. 

The campaign has raised more than $27million since its launch in 2009. During week six of the NFL season, the campaign is honored as players and coaches wear pink clothes and cleats for breast cancer awareness. 

In 2023, Snyder sold the NFL team to Josh Harris following an investigation into Snyder that resulted in a $60million fine by the NFL.

The NFL launched an investigation into misconduct and financial improprieties by Snyder after allegations came to light that were made by former team employee Tiffani Johnston at a Congressional roundtable in 2022.

According to the NFL, White and her colleagues conducted a comprehensive independent investigation over 17 months that included interviews with dozens of witnesses, sometimes on multiple occasions, a review of over 10,000 documents, and assistance from a team of forensic accountants.

'The conduct substantiated in Ms. White's findings has no place in the NFL,' said Goodell.

Johnston, a former cheerleader and marketing manager for the Commanders, told members of a House Oversight Committee that Snyder made sexual advances on her. Snyder has denied Johnston's claims, calling them 'outright lies.'

According to White's report, she accepted the claim that Snyder, without consent, put his hand on Johnston's thigh under a restaurant table at a work-related dinner.

White also said Johnston's allegation that Snyder pushed her towards the back seat of his car in an effort to have her join him after the dinner is sustained.

Throughout Snyder's tenure, the team was criticized for its now-former nickname, the Redskins, which is considered offensive to Native Americans.

Snyder fought the change for years, but Washington finally dropped the 'Redskins' name in 2020 under a wave of scrutiny amid the George Floyd protests.

That change - first to the placeholder 'Washington Football Team' and then to 'Commanders' - also angered many fans and conservatives.

Snyder became wealthy in the 1990s after selling his communications firm to a French advertising conglomerate in a $2 billion deal.

The long-time Redskins fan splurged $800 million for the club in 1999, but failed to build a successful culture in Washington amid battles with executives, minority partners, local government officials, the NFL, media and, most of all, disgruntled fans.
